Which interstate, 70 or 80, is more pleasant to travel by car across the US?
Not that there’s anything wrong with I-80, mind you, but you get an awful lot of open prairie on the long stretch across Wyoming, Nebraska and Iowa. The Mississippi River bridge at Davenport is one of the great bridges, but I’m not sure it’s enough to make up for hundreds of miles of grasslands. Then you’ll have to run the gamut of snarled highways and snarling drivers around Chicago, and join the constant 18-wheeler traffic carrying parts and manufactured goods between Chicago and the East Coast. It’s kind of interesting just to drive along and see how many different things move along the roads, but that’s not exactly scenery….more like American Industry 101. I-70 begins just north of the Bryce Canyon National Park, in one of the prettiest parts of Utah. You’ll cross the Rockies on the “ski slope” trail and descend into Denver. There are still the flatlands to cross, but the stretch across Kansas is not quite so long, and you’ll pass through some thrilling places if you’re a fan of
