Colleges look at your cummulative GPA in high school. The higher your GPA, the better. A 3.0 or higher is best. When you apply to college, not just GPA is looked at, but also your volunteer experience, job experience, and your application essay. If you are planning on going directly to a university, then you have to take an entrance exam, and the lower your GPA, the higher the score on that exam must be. (SAT). If the university you apply to has more applicants than openings, then they will probably choose those applicants with the higher overall rating. An alternative is to attend a 2 year community college. In my state of California, it is much cheaper to go to a 2 year college, then transfer to a university. If you take only classes that will transfer, you will then be halfway to your degree in those first 2 years. Once you transfer, you will only need 2 more years at the university to get your degree. And you do not need to take the SAT to get in. Community colleges are a good rout

I agree that must colleges will look at the cummulative GPA which will be noted in the school transcript. But that is only a part of your application. Remember that they will also give consideration to your extracurricular activities, (such as school clubs, sport, awards and volunteering) writing skill and standardized tests scores.
