Timms graduated from Deakin antecedent institution, Burwood Teachers College, with a Diploma of Teaching (Primary). Timms began her professional basketball career in 1984 and was the first Australian woman to play internationally in 1989. While representing Australia at the Olympics, she won a bronze medal in 1996 and a silver medal in 2000. In 1997 Timms began playing for the Pheonix Mercury in the Women’s National Basketball Association, before retiring in 2001 and taking up a role in broadcasting. Her number 7 guernsey was the first to be retired by the Mercury. She was appointed assistant coach of the Mercury in 2005. Timms has since worked for the South Dragons in the Australian National Basketball League as a development officer. In 2008 she was appointed assistant coach of the Chinese women’s national basketball team.
