all elevators either mine shaft or building act the same way gravity,this pulls them down and a cable and winch method is used to raise them up.however new elevators up to five floors now use hydraulic systems to raise and lower the cage this is safer and smoother than cable if the fluid leaks the elevator comes slowly down to is lowest level.cable elevators need safety devices and speed brakes.
