When concerns are raised about children’s school success, many traditionally turn to their child’s school for answers because it is well known that teachers and schools have an impact on the academic success of children. Schools are often seen to have more of an impact than parents on the education of children. However, parents are the first educators of their children and are responsible for providing them with a physical, emotional, and mental framework for learning. How important is the family for school success? Little research attention is generally given to what families bring to a child’s school achievement. To address this issue, Bruce A. Ryan and Gerald R. Adams of the University of Guelph developed a general model called the Family School Relationships (FSR) Model.
