I wondered the same thing. The only conclusion I could draw came from fairly in-depth research on the history of the movie- it has been remade 4 times now. In one of the movie’s trivia sections, the good guy realizes that he is the last human on earth, and that he now is the monster, since he kills the bad guys who are the majority of the population. Sort of like, all of the bad guys are really trembling, terrified of being murdered by some heartless monster even though they’re innocent- similiar to how we’re scared of monsters under our bed, dismissing them as absolute evil beings who only want to kill. The alternate ending, then, would bring me to suspect that Will Smith believes himself to be a monster for tearing apart the bad guy’s family, and considers himself no better than the diseased, which were so closely related to his own family’s death. This can be seen through the butterfly on the glass and the butterfly symbol his daughter shows him (which I thought was corny and a bit

The second one is considered to be controversial, because im going to guess that these dark beasts are portrayed throughout the entire movie as being primitive beings. I suppose that the act of love between the leader and his lover is bringing up the idea of evolution since there mind is evolving to where they can understand feelings such as love. This is probably controversial because of how god is mentioned so much in the ending and bringing up this concept would confuse and possibly anger some people.
