Franklin wrestles the kite in a blowing wind, a bolt of lightning strikes a spark and a new chapter in the history of science begins. The ingenuity, cleverness and daring of Franklin’s kite is a solid, original ingredient of our American heritage. How many young people have stood in the rain, kites aloft, keys dangling from string, trying to duplicate the thrill of Franklin when he wrote of receiving the “electric fire freely” as it “streamed out plentifully from the key on the approach of your knuckle”? In his (pardon me) electrifying book, “Bolt of Fate,” Tom Tucker writes convincingly that Franklin never did in fact conduct this experiment. He even goes so far as to call Franklin’s claim a hoax.
