Each of the nations which participated in World War One from 1914-18 used propaganda posters not only as a means of justifying involvement to their own populace, but also as a means of procuring men, money and resources to sustain the military campaign. In countries such as Britain the use of propaganda posters was readily understandable: in 1914 she only possessed a professional army and did not have in place a policy of national service, as was standard in other major nations such as France and Germany. Yet while the use of posters proved initially successful in Britain the numbers required for active service at the Front were such as to ultimately require the introduction of conscription. Try this for starters… http://www.firstworldwar.com/posters/ind… With stories abound such as the crucified Canadian soldier on the western front propaganda justified the war and increased public opinion of it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crucifi… A good example of propaganda reads : “A barbaric horde of Hun-like warriors swept across neutral Belgium without justification, destroying everything in its wake, bayoneting women and children, torturing priests in an ungodlike manner”. Although a different slant might read: Facing cruel acts of sabotage and terrorism the sons of chivalric Teutonic knights sought justice against the underhand methods practiced by the despotic puppet government of the poor suppressed Germanic neighbours. Propaganda is arguably the most powerful weapon of modern warfare.

All of the nations in the war used Propaganda. As far as what type, I’m not sure what you mean. Print and poster, certainly, but movies, too, to a small extent. TV hadn’t been invented, and radio was still being used as a wireless telegraph (as the patents state), so there weren’t that many types, if that’s what you mean..

I agree with all that has been said about the widespread and effective use of posters in the propaganda campaign by all sides but what has not been touched upon was the degree of control imposed upon the press both voluntary and through censorship. The media were fed with stories where successes were elaborated and failures either suppressed, covered up or minimised to present a more optimistic than realistic interpretation.
