I’m not a cooking expert but, my suggestion would be to try different ingredients and select the one YOU like the best. After all this is the way most great recipes have been developed, trial and error, to develop a taste and tecture/look that suits the likes/needs/desires of the one who is cooking/presenting of the recipe.

Cream cheese works well but I like neufchatel cheese too since it is very close to cream cheese in taste and texture but is lower in fat. Marscapone is great too but it costs more and since you’ll be using it as frosting you won’t notice its great flavor.
