Which courts receive adoption petitions in the various states?
In the vast majority of states, adoption petitions are filed in the trial court of general jurisdiction. In Alabama, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Vermont, the probate court hears adoptions, and in Nebraska, that responsibility falls to a court of limited jurisdiction. In Indiana, Louisiana, New York, Texas, and Utah, two or more courts have the authority to hear petitions for adoption.
