There isn’t really a clear-cut answer. The US and other English-speaking countries such as Canada, the UK, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand all have the same literacy rate (99.0%). The US however has the highest population, so it would seem only natural that they have the highest number of English readers but there doesn’t seem to be evidence to support that conclusion since basic literacy does not translate directly into numbers of books read.
