Which Chicago Charter Schools Pay More into Pension Fund?
Jim Vail – July 13, 2010 When it comes to money, Chicago charter schools are about as transparent as the night. These semi-private schools aren’t governed by the same transparency obligations as regular public schools — even though they receive more than 80 percent of their operating budget from CPS. Although certified charter school teachers — considered “private contractors” by CPS — make a lot less than their unionized public school colleagues and draw fewer benefits, they still pay into the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund (CTPF). Thankfully, a little sunshine opened up on our private school operators after the (CTPF) released a breakdown of how much each Chicago charter school contributes to the teacher’s pension fund — versus how much their employees have to pay in.
