bryan_q is right, spoken Cantonese in HK is a mixture of Cantonese words / slangs with the occassional English words in it. It really depends on your purpose, but I would say if you are planning to stay there for long, perhaps you should focus a bit more on mandarin, because should you happen to go to China, you will be ready for it (Although in major cities in China English can be understaood). Personally speaking, Cantonese is more or less a language created to be spoken and you might find what you learn in textbook very different from what actually go through your ears. So I guess you can get away with learning Mandarin through texts, but I really do recommend you get yourself a language partner for Cantonese. I know it sounds obvious, but unless you actually start speaking and listening to the new language, it would be quite impossible to improve your knowledge on it.
