Which breed has the strongest jaws?
The strength of jaw muscle varies considerably from dog to dog. It depends a lot on how much the dog exercises his jaws. A black lab that plays tug of war several hours a day may have a stronger jaw than a lazy pit bull that sleeps on the couch all day. There’s really no way to measure jaw strength, since dogs don’t always bite with the same pressure–it varies depending on the situation. Dogs bite hard because they want to or have to, with little to do with jaw strength (the strongest dogs may never feel a need to bite their hardest). No dog has ever been measured having more than something like 300psi (I believe the one that bit down the hardest was a rottweiler?). But a dog biting a sleeve as part of an exercise is not necessarily biting his hardest possible. Aggression is partly genetic but largely based on the treatment of an animal.
