As the following table shows, humans have been on Earth a relatively short period of time compared to other animals. Marine invertebrates (animals with no backbone) were present at the end of the Precambrian Era (about 3,800 million years ago). Humans, however, have been present on the Earth only since the Cenozoic Era (approximately 10,000 years ago).
