Think about our solar system with the sun in the middle which will be the protons and the neutrons and then the planets around the sun as electrons. Protons have a plus charge Electrons a negative charge Neutrons a neutral charge (though its hypothesized that neutrons are made out of a proton and an electron which renders it neutral … if this is true …. electrons can be in the nucleus too …..) There will be maximum of 2 electrons on the first shell and 8 on the second and 18 on the third etc etc. Electrons are so small and thus will not be used to calculate the mass of the atom, while protons and neutrons masses will be added to get the mass of the atom.
