Which batman graphic novel should I read 1st?
The problem with reading both Dark Knight Returns and Hush is that though they are both good stories, with Dark Knight being one of the best ever written, they are not introductory stories. These stories require some decent knowledge of Gotham in order to fully understand and appreciate them. I would hold off reading these till you have read others first. Batman Year 1 was written by the same guy who wrote Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller. This book is the first year Bruce Wayne became Batman, which the Batman Begin movie was somewhat based off of. It should introduce to you well the various characters and “start your Batman Education”. Other classics include The Killing Joke, previously mentioned, written by Alan Moore, the greatest graphic novel writer in history. Another perennial favorite is Long Halloween.
