Which are the top three brands for mountaineering ropes ?
There are several things to consider when buying ropes – length (most prefer 60m), diameter (10.5 for Toprope, 10.0 for lead), and the specs like weight, stretch, etc. There are also preferences like “hand” – how the rope feels and color. I prefer ropes with a tighter outer sheath weave that is a little stiff when new that gets better when broken in. Some ropes feel perfect when new (New England, Bluewater) Remember that if you are going to fall on a rope it needs to be a “dynamic” rope. A static rope has no stretch and will break you in half if you fall and it catches you. These are the ones that I like the best: Sterling Marathon 10.4 http://www.sterlingrope.com/climbing_pro… PMI http://www.rei.com/product/767454 Maxim http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Prod…<
