An independent variable is the one thing in the experiment that is changed on purpose to test the hypothesis. The dependent variable is how the results of the experiement were different because of the independent variable (because of what was changed intentionally). For your experiment, your independent variable is: the type of rocks you tested. (You intentionally tested four different types of rocks) The dependent variable is: the final weight of each cup of rocks.
