Kenwood is generally know as a manufacturer of Amateur Radio equipment, in which case the user will require amateur radio licensing. However, Kenwood does also manufacture Business Band and FRS/GMRS radios as well. Only FRS radios do not require licensing to operate. However, I believe GMRS radios “may” require a license from the FCC: http://www.provide.net/~prsg/part95ae.ht… But, licensing rules aside, on the issue of transmitter range vs. transmitter power levels: For a given circumstance, higher power will always give you longer range (however minimal the gain may be). But, more importantly is the “given circumstances” from where you are transmitting. Power alone is not a criteria on which to base the range of a transmitter. More important than range, is your location in relation to the person receiving your transmissions. In other words, the higher your elevation, and the higher the elevation of the person
