Which airport uses the IATA airport code IAD?”

Does anyone know why foreign carriers use the IATA airport codes for a region rather than the actual airport codes? For instance, all international flights that UA uses out of Dulles are marked IAD. Yet, when I book on LH or OS, the IATA code is WAS. Same goes for JFK/NYC and ORD/CHI. I know that these codes show up on mileage statements as well as some of the actual tickets. It’s happened for years but I never bothered to ask the question (at least to a CSR). I’m not irritated by it by any means, I was just wondering if there was a specific purpose. corwinsl is offline Reply With Quote Old Oct 19, 02, 7:21 pm #2 yogimh49 Join Date: Aug 2002 Location: FRA Programs: UA 2P Posts: 79 Even stranger: In their electronic timetable (worldwide), LH uses BZS (according to IATA: Washington DC, Buzzards Pt S) and CGX (IATA: Chicago IL, Merril C Meigs) instead of IAD and ORD as the Airports where you have to change planes when for example going from MUC to BOS or SAC.
