I used to work on the ground (loading bags) for American Airlines. I worked for them in the dead of winter and we used to always carry pets in the very first cargo in on the aircraft. That cargo hold is heated and is controlled by the pilots upstairs. However, since it’s controlled by the pilots, I’ve seen instances where they didn’t heat the cargo hold up and the animals died in flight. Also I’ve seen planes come in where the animal is loaded in the wrong cargo hold and the animal again passed away. I would recommend paying the pet fee and bring your animal on board the aircraft if it will fit under the seat in front of you. That way you know your pet is safe from any harm that the ground crew can cause. If your animal is too big, then here is a little tip that can get your dog on the plane, not in a pet carrier, for free!! This will take a little bit of nerve on your part though.
