Wheres the Shane Warne stand?
THE greatest Test wicket-taker in the history of the game has been overlooked in the naming of areas at the new MCG an glaring omission that is unbelievable, unfair and downright disrespectful. Shane Keith Warne will go down in history as the second greatest player (behind Don Bradman) the game has ever seen. He was not that long ago named as one of Wisden’s five greatest cricketers of the century and in 2002 was named the greatest ever Victorian sportsperson, yet none of the grandstands, gates, bars or dining rooms are named in his honour at his much-loved MCG. Perhaps the unspoken rule is that a sportsperson must be retired before something can be named in their honour. What an old-fashioned, out-of-date load of rubbish. Why do we have to wait until people are no longer with us or that old that their sporting career is but a distant memory?
