Wheres the money for the TV commercials and newspaper ads coming from?
The Spirit Lake nickname supporters are planning a media blitz and this will cost them money. I have no idea how much, but I’d think it would run in the thousands. Eunice assured me that the group is not taking money from the Ralph or any outside groups. My concern was with wealthy UND alumni slipping the group money, which, from a tribal sovereignty perspective, would really be no different than the Ralph providing funding. If she’s being truthful — And I have to go with that as it’s not my practice to assume guilt before it’s proven — then there must be some relatively well-off nickname supporters on the reservation. Despite the general poverty there, I suppose it’d be racist to assume that everybody is poor.
