Wheres the holiday spirit?
The whining started early, just as the Christmas season kicked off. December always brings a get-together or two. Whether it’s a company party or an informal meet up, it’s a chance to gather with friends, neighbours or clients and share some holiday cheer. Or, rather, that’s what it’s supposed to be about. The holiday sense of entitlement first showed up at my condo’s holiday party, where several attendees arrived empty-handed and then complained — loudly and drunkenly — when the wine that had been provided ran out. The committee members who organized the event, who took time off from their jobs to decorate the space and who worked out sponsors to provide food and a first round of drinks, were understandably miffed. The same pattern played itself out during the month. I heard several folks complain that regular parties were either scaled back or cancelled outright in light of the tough economic times.
