Wheres St. Andrew on UPEI flag?
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Editor: Re. ‘University raises flag for first time, celebrates heritage’ The Guardian, July 31. Congratulations to UPEI on inaugurating their distinctive flag which is based on their new coat of arms. Heraldic devices have long been used by individuals or groups for purposes of identification, to acknowledge their origins and to proclaim their objectives. It is unfortunate that in devising their new arms the university did not follow the pattern of their previous one which, in addition to containing symbols representing its antecedent institutions, St. Dunstan’s University and Prince of Wales College, carried the image of St. Andrew whose name was given to the very first institution of higher learning on the Island. St. Andrew’s College was opened in 1831 at St. Andrews by Rev. Angus Bernard MacEachern, the first bishop of Charlottetown.
