Wheres justification for rate hike?
Regarding your July 10 article “MLGW warns bills could grow 30%”: Let’s just address electricity. TVA provides power to Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division. Sure, labor and maintenance costs increase each year with inflation, but water is a gift from the earth and skies. That is a non-cost, free element of nature. The dams are long ago built, the TVA structure has been long ago paid by the taxpayer. Please tell me why I can expect a 13.5 percent increase in my electrical bill. Did we have a severe shortage of rain? I don’t think so. My Social Security check does not have that percentage rate of increase, nor does my bank account. But we all depend on electrical energy today. MLGW has us where they want us. If you want it, you are going to pay whatever MLGW decides they can get. By the way, how much does MLGW’s profit go back into the public service of their service area? That’s an interesting question for your research reporters. MGLW is a publicly owned city/county resource with man
