Are you more into the mountains, the coast, or piedmont type regions? If you would like to live a little bit towards the mountains, there’s a great town (don’t let the residents hear you call it a town though, because they want to think of it as the city) called Mount Airy. It’s a really great place to call home! Also the hometown of country singer Donna Fargo (she’s a very nice lady, by the way) and Andy Griffith (in fact, the “fictional” town of Mayberry was based upon Mt. Airy, and the town of Mt. Pilot from the show is actually the nearby town of Pilot Mountain), Mt. Airy has a lower cost of living and some really great down-home people. It is the epitome of southern hospitality. Many retirees do decide to settle in Mt. Airy because of the lower crime rate, lower cost of living, and it’s distance from some great places to visit.
