Where would you rather live: Emerging I-85 Piedmont Megalopolis or Bos-Wash Megalopolis?
I want to move to DC, so I had to pick Bos-Wash. But the differences between the two are really a matter of maturity. The emerging Piedmont megalopolis is in its infancy, whereas Bos-Wash has been soundly established for some time now. In all honesty, I don’t even want to see a Piedmont megalopolis emerge because it will consist of nothing but more of the same between its metropolitan areas: fast food joints, cookie cutter housing, and strip malls. I’m not exactly excited to see that devour all of our pristine countryside. Our Southern metro areas need to be densifying, not sprawling into each other haphazardly. And let’s not pretend that a bunch of sprawl doesn’t exist between the cities in the Bos-Wash corridor either, because it does.
