Where will the shelter be located and will the community be consulted?
Durham Youth Housing and Support Services Board Members looked at existing housing suitable for a 10-bed emergency shelter in southern Durham. A location was found in the Town of Ajax and following consultation with elected officials and residents of Ajax, we opened Durham Youth House on April 7, 2008.and residents. The longer-term, larger proposed 50 bed unit with 10 beds of transitional housing would be located on a different site and would definitely be subject to more public consultation. • Why was Durham Youth Housing and Support Services formed? Durham Youth Housing and Support Services (DYHSS) was formed to fill a need for shelter for homeless and at-risk youth in the Durham Region. When fully realized, the scope of our efforts will reach out to homeless youth in: Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby.
