Where will the new parking garage be located?
There are 3 locations outlined in the traffic and parking study: the VA Research facility (northeast corner of McClurg and Ontario), the Northwestern MRI facility (on Ontario, just west of Lake Shore Drive), and the Rehabilitation Institute’s surface lot (the southeast corner of Ohio and McClurg). The proposed PD amendment suggests that the garage could also be located as far south as Illinois. These locations assume that the community is in agreement with bringing additional cars to the neighborhood in the first place. SOAR has suggested that the institutions build the necessary parking capacity outside of the neighborhood along with amenities and services that will encourage employees to use the facility (e.g., day care, work out facilities, etc.). This type of solution would allow the people-growth projected by the institutions but help decrease the auto traffic and congestion brought to the neighborhood.
