Where will the new Academy Sports and Outdoors open its next location?
Academy Sports & Outdoors will open its Waco store in late July, barring any construction delays. That was the official word Thursday from Michelle McKinney, executive vice president for operations. Work has begun on converting a portion of the old Kmart building at Franklin Avenue and New Road into a 77,169-square-foot Academy. Local fans of the chain, based in Katy, Texas, are already getting excited. “A lot of sportsmen are looking forward to having an Academy here. On Friday, July 24, Academy Sports + Outdoors will open its second store in the Upstate. The owner of the company, Arthur Gochman, will be on hand to help commemorate the event. In 1938 Arthur helped open the very first Academy store with his father, Max Gochman, in San Antonio, Texas.
