Where was the game of golf invented?
It is generally held that the game was invented in Scotland but there is a school of thought (and some evidence exists to back this up) that it was the Dutch who first began swatting a ball about with some sort of club. However, some Flemish paintings depict the activity as taking place on ice so it could have been the forerunner of ice hockey or even hockey. But indisputable evidence of golf comes from the Scottish parliamentary statute books of the 1400s when ‘the gouf’ as it was then called was banned by King James II of Scotland because it was becoming too popular a pastime interfering with archery practice. This comes from The History of Golf by Michael Williams.
