Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who later became popular by his pen name “Mark Twain”, was born in Missouri on November 30, 1835 to John Marshall Clemens, a country merchant, and Jane Lampton Clemens. He was the sixth of the seven children but had a tragic and difficult childhood as he lost 3 of his siblings at a very young age and his father at the age of 11.
