Where to Start Jazz Music?

Start with the following albums: A compilation of Louis Armstrong’s Hot Fives and Hot Sevens A Duke Ellington compilation “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis “A Love Supreme” by John Coltrane Charlie Parker’s “Jazz at Massey Hall” or a compilation. If you want to get further into jazz, get more albums by those artists (especially “Bitches Brew” by Davis and “Giant Steps” by Coltrane), and check out Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck and Ornette Coleman. If you want vocal jazz, make sure you get Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong’s vocal work. By the way, this just reflects what I consider essential, not necessarily my favorite artists. And I agree that if you’re only going to get one album, it should probably be “Kind of Blue.
