Where to start in fashion design and patternmaking?
Foundation is everything. I believe that there are three fundamental factors you should develop: 1. Design 2. Construction 3. Merchandising The first two are obvious, but good merchandising will sell. Since you’re still in high school, I suggest you work on the first two. Develop your own identity as an artist and your style will show through. *But you will have to know how to adapt to the needs of your customers.* Basic patternmaking and sewing will not cost much–but it will be absolutely worth it if you get lessons from a tailor or seamstress or any experienced patternmaker–you WILL have to pay for a good foundation on this. Basic is basic and you don’t need to pay too much for it. Once you have become good at the basics, you can invest in buying good complete textbooks that will serve as reference to you for the rest of your career.
