Start with short stories, sometimes they evolve into novels later. Buy a book about writing that includes exercises that may help get the gears turning. Elizabeth George does a decent one called “Write Away”. She goes through how to do various portions of the book, and also talks about what she finds is most helpful to her to actually get that writing done. Her secret, she says, is “Bum glue” 🙂 Another more structured book that is also pretty good- very different from George’s book- is the Marshall Plan for Novel Writing: http://www.amazon.com/Marshall-Plan-Nove… One of my favorite short-story exercises was to take a news story and write a ficticious piece on it. This is really best for short story writing, but it can also give some great ideas and help light that spark. Some authors say they let the book write itself. They just write
