Where to find old or used (unserviceable/grounded) airplanes?
The three largest storage facilities in the US for aircraft that are headed for the scrap heap are Mojave, CA, Victorville, CA and Marana, AZ. Most of those aircraft are owned by the indiviual airlines or leasing companies and are being parted out before they are completely destroyed for the aluminum, which is recycled. If you are looking for a donation, it’s doubtful you’ll get one, they’re still worth a considerable sum of money as parts and scrap aluminum. The engines are nearly always removed and reused. They are very expensive, and they can be used as spares. Since they are still serviceable, they can be actively used on in-service aircraft. So, it’s highly unlikely you’d get anything with an engine attached. I deal with airlines and leasing companies retiring aircraft all the time. So, even as in retirement, they’re still being ‘used’.
