Where to find an assistant photographer job in London?
The only real answer to this that I’m aware of, barring seeing adverts in photography magazines, is to ‘cold call’. You can either be brave and hawk your work from door to door, or send out pro forma type letters to all of the photographers you see listed in the yellow pages. Try and see if you can qualify for licenciateship of the BIPP (British Institute of Professional Photographers) I had many college leavers with more academic qualifications in photography than I had picking my business out of the yellow pages and writing letters to me applying for assistant’s jobs.. These were hand written which said to me that they were prepared to work at applying. A phone call would have pissed me off and I’d have seen this as lazy and ‘impertinent’. A cold call, although inconvenient would have been impressive as long as they recognised that I might just be too busy to see them right then.
