(AXcess News) New York – Local authorities report that a plane has gone down, crash landing in a Rockaway Townsquare Mall parking lot. The plane, a single-engine Cessna, apparently landed in the Rockaway Townsquare Mall parking lot with both the pilot and passenger walking away from the crash landing unhurt. The Morris County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene along with local firefighters who quickly doused the Cessna with fire-retardant foam to avoid the plane catching fire. The pilot was taken to a local hospital complaining of back pain. Witnesses said the plane appeared to make a ‘controlled crash landing”. The Cessna was en route to the Essex County Airport when it apparently experienced engine failure and was forced to land in the Rockaway Townsquare Mall parking lot. At the time of the crash landing, witnesses said the Cessna skimmed tree tops, breaking some branches when it finally went down on the parking lot of the Mall near JC Penny’s store, spun around and came to a halt. The plane’s pilot managed to walk away without any serious injuries, officials said. The condition of his only passenger is still unknown. A JC Penny store employee said she saw the front end of the plane appeared to be damaged. No injuries or damage were reported on the ground. Local authorities and EMS units were still on the scene. The mishap was the third incident in New Jersey within a month concerning a small plane. They were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 30-year-old plane reportedly was heading to Essex County Airport when it encountered engine problems and was forced to land.
