The map in Figure 4 shows the percentage of registered Hispanic voters. Percent statistics are shown for each of the 34 Fitchburg census blocks. The choropleth map was created using the natural breaks classification method. The labels over each census block show the total number of registered Hispanic voters .vs. the total Hispanic population as determined by the 2000 census. This is a good map. However, it can be misleading. Look at the census bloc at the bottom center of the map. It is colored to indicate it is in the 35-50% category. The percentage of Hispanics that are registered is 50% for this block. That is impressive until you look at the label and see that there are only 14 Hispanics living in that block. It probably isn’t worth distributing Spanish language fliers in this block. Perhaps question 3 might be better answered if we knew the percentage of Hispanics to the total population.
