Where should I eat in Santiago de Compostela?Answer: The Rua Franco, a narrow street that runs the length of the old town from the Cathedral square (the Plaza de Obradoiro: “Obradoiro” = “work of gold”) to the Herradura Park to the start of the (uninteresting) new town, is filled with tapas bars that are also restaurants – dozens and dozens of them. Since dinner does not begin being served until about 9:30 p.m., a meal of tapas, taken hopping from one place to another or just staying put in one you like, might be right for non-Spanish travelers. The almost parallel Rua Nova also has tapas bars/restaurants, but the restaurants tend to be fancier: Don Gaiferos is elegant and pricey but very good. On the Plaza de la Universidad is an old, famous restaurant called El Asesino, so called because it’s the place where they used to kill chickens. It is owned by three old sisters and has great charm and good food at reasonable prices and sometimes they start serving meals as early as 8:30! Read
