Hopefully this is not a shopping excursion you’ll have to do often (I’ve done it once myself and will have to do it again someday if I get remarried). I would really recommend doing this in person. While online can give you a decent idea of what you’re getting, there’s nothing like actually being there to see what you’re buying. If you’re not too familiar with diamonds, see if someone you know has some experience and can go with you. Know at least the 4 Cs before you go shopping (cut, clarity, color, carats) and how they impact price.
