Where is Washington Heights, in New York, referred to as in terms of geography?

It is the farthest northern part of Manhattan – northern tip of the island. EDIT: It is NOT on the Upper West Side, because that neighborhood is called (surprise, surprise) “The Upper West Side”. The term “Upper West Side” is not directional – it’s the name of a neighborhood. And Washington Heights is WAYYYY north of there. In between is Harlem, which is HUGE. Yes, NYC has a ‘west side’ and an ‘east side’, but certain parts of the island (way north and way south) those terms become meaningless, as the island is narrower there. Oh, and AJF, this is not directed at you, BTW, but to Black Francis who’s answer shows that he/she does not know much about NYC geography.
