Where is there a Catholic church that will marry us in northwest suburbs?
You have to be Catholic to get a Catholic wedding, because Catholics have a different understanding of marriage than most other people. We consider it a sacrament, an unbreakable sacred bond through which grace is bestowed on the husband and wife. It takes considerable preparation and an agreement with all the concepts to have a Catholic marriage. If you’re just not practicing, join a parish and start practicing Catholicism, and then you can have your Catholic wedding. If neither of you are Catholic, at least one of you would have to convert, which takes 7-8 months, before you can start the Catholic marriage prep, which takes another 6 months.
If you are a baptized Catholic, they should agree to marry you. (There are a ton of steps to the wedding, of course.) But the rules are pretty universal. One of you needs to be at least baptized Catholic inorder to marry in any Catholic Church. If only one of you is baptized Catholic, they seem to prefer that person also be confirmed, since marriage is a sacrament and therefore a big deal. Whether or not you are parishoners at a specific parish should not affect whether or not they’ll marry you there. If it is, you should get in touch with the Arch-diocese and explain your situation. They’ll be able to direct you to a parish which is following the rules and will help you find one that will marry you. If neither of you are baptized Catholic, you can not marry in a Catholic Church. Sorry this was not site specific, but I thought it might still help! Congrats and Good luck!
