The oldest is on the Sacramento River above Bend Bridge, near Red Bluff, CA. The gage was first established in 1879, and the USGS began collecting river discharge (flow) data in October 1891. The USGS has a continuous record at the gage from 1891 to the present. The highest discharge recorded was 291,000 cubic feet per second in 1940. After Shasta Dam was built in 1943 and flows were regulated at Shasta Lake, the highest flow has been 170,000 cubic feet per second, recorded on Dec. 22, 1964. For more on this gage.
