The Euphrate River is the western of the two great rivers that define Mesopotamia and the other being the Tigris which is located and flows from Anatolia through Iraq. It is formed by the union of two branches: the Kara Su northeast of Erzurum, in the Kargapazari Mountains and the Murat northeast of Lake Van, about midway between Lake Van and Mount Ararat.
