Where is the drop-off donation area for non-monetary donations at the new shelter?
The drop off area for non-monetary donations will be near the Intake Parking lot. An enclosed bin will be provided to protect donations from the elements. Room for expansion doesn’t seem planned for. The City has been very dedicated to programs that prevent animal intake into the shelters. For example, the city offers free sterilization services, free microchips, free vaccinations, outreach programs, and education programs in high-intake neighborhoods. Additionally, through the Mission Orange project, free sterilization services are available for free roaming and feral cats throughout the community. These programs have stabilized animal intake while the Austin area population has grown substantially. In Fiscal Year 2009 we have experienced a 30% reduction in cat intake alone. Due to these trends, we believe that the facility designed will meet the needs of the Austin area without requiring expansion.
