Where is the Best Upscale Casual Dining in Phoenix, Arizona?
Portland’s is an all-around great dining experience. The dining room is small enough that you receive great personal attention from your server. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and the extensive wine list. Our wine selection couldn’t have been better paired with our meals, and the prices were in line with the quality, unlike some places that like to inflate prices. This is a great place for a date – either in jeans or dressed up. The bar was rocking the night we were there, but the restaurant proved to be quiet enough for conversation. All around a terrific experience. My only complaint is that the fish I ordered was overcooked. Perhaps that’s my own fault for ordering fish in the desert …?
I recently went here for the first time, it was interesting. They walked us through the kitchen before seating us, not sure what I think of that. The resturant had an old house or antique store smell. A little disgusting, but I would have to say the staff made it a very positive experience. The dishes are generally for 2 or more, or 3 or more but there are some that you can order for just one person. I like the family style menu, however, it doesn’t work with any group of people. The salads are amazing and the lasanga wasn’t as good as olive garden. Overall, good not great food, nice staff, and good atmosphere.
I came alone on a monday night. It was busy but not so much that there was a wait. I sat on the patio. Ordered the baby octopus salad, unagi nigiri, yellowtail sashimi and a glass of plum wine. They also give you a very nice cucumber salad as a starter. All the fish was very fresh and flavorful, the portion sizes were good, perhaps even a bit large since I took most of the octupus and a couple pieces of sashimi home for late night snacking. The plum wine was excellent, not overly sweet like it can sometimes be. They played a little background japanese music which was nice and not distracting. I appreciated that since I was alone and reading while I ate. The only complaint I have is that it is a tad pricey, but not overly so given the large portions and the outstanding quality.They had a pretty good variety, though a few more sashimi combo offerings would be nice as would chirashi.Service was good, they were attentive (some places ignore single diners or are downright rude)
We ate dinner at North on a Sunday night. When we got there, the dining room was about 1/3 full. We were given a table with no wait. We ordered a variety of items, an appetizer, a salad, a pizza and an entree to split between the two of us. The food came out very quickly. Too quickly in fact. We felt rushed through the courses, as we were only half-way through the appetizers when the entree was put on the table. The food itself was fantastic. Hot foods were hot, cold were cold, and all tasted great. My biggest issue was that while we were finishing up (and there were nine other tables of diners), a group of waitresses came out of the kitchen with plates of food, and styrofoam cups from Jamba Juice, and proceeded to sit at the table behind us, and start eating. One of the waitresses got up a few times to check on her tables- WHO WERE STILL EATING. I understand that the staff needs to eat, but they should not be in the dining room with the customers.
