Where is the Best Steak in San Francisco, California?
I took my boyfriend to Cityscape because I had heard that the view was phenomenom. I made a reservation early in the day for the same night. We took bart; so that we didn’t have to worry about parking, but later learned that Cityscape covers the parking fee. The atmosphere is very romantic with dim lights and an excellent view of San Francisco. Perfect if you want to have private converstaions. We were seated immediately upon arrival and were given our menus and hard bread. The bread looked like it had been sitting out for a while. The menu’s were really small, plain and overly expensive. I ordered the chicken rosstiere: the chicken was very plain and the mashed patatoes were ehh-ok, my boyfriend ordered grilled angus steak with the frys and he said they were nothing out of the ordinary. As appetizers, we ordered the Apple salad and the lobster bisque. The salad was the only good thing and was not so expensive. All in all, the total was $95. i thought that the food lacked alot of flavo
I came here with my two sisters and had a blast; I will definitely take my boyfriend here. Parking is tough in the neighborhood, so I suggest you do the valet service- it’s only ten dollars (we were there on a Thursday, don’t know how much it will be on the weekend). Definitely make reservations because it gets really busy. Although inside was very nice, we sat outside and it was great how they had heat lamps for when it?s cold- but I only suggest you eat outside if it’s NOT WINDY. Also, the restaurant is set on a little hill- so it felt a little funny sitting slanted and all. But after you drink some wine, you won’t care! Monday through Friday they offer the pre-fix menu for only about 30 dollars. You get soup or salad; choice of appetizer and main course. It was great!!!! Everything was very flavorful- but don’t expect the portions to be big, I thought it was perfectly sized. This is a good choice if you’re going to the theaters, just a block down Geary. After a matinee at the Curran, we showed up 15 min early for our reservation, no problem. Lovely pomegranate martinis, the pita with the hummus appetizer was warm and chewy, really good. The lamb shank looked like it was on steroids, but very tender. I had the trout stuffed with crab which was great, but the sides were only ok. The berry cobbler and fudge brownie pie were easily enough for two. May not be the most innovative cuisine, but we were very satisfied. Clientele was a little older, dare I say middle aged? Their retro feel clicked with my group of baby boomers. It was full at 7pm mid-week, so make reservations.
I do not understand the popularity of this restaurant. Yes, they have the historical charm of having been mentioned in The Maltese Falcon. However, as a dining establishment, John’s Grill falls terribly short. I suppose that if 25%-35% were shaved from the bill I’d feel that the menu prices fit the value, but this is not the case. Do yourself a favour, if the John’s Grill of the Maltese Falcon is an experience which you must have, have a drink at the bar but avoid the “tourist trap” menu at all costs.
The food was very good. I had the Chop Salad and Filet, but everyone in my party enjoyed what they ordered. We were not very pleased with the service though. At first they were very responsive but after we received our food we literally had to waive our hands in the air and grab just anyone walking by to get the butter and sour cream for our plain potatoe(they walk around with a tray of butter sour cream and chives instead of putting it on your plate automatically), refill of our drinks and even had to wait forever just to get our ticket. We had a group of 10 but the entire restaurant only seats approximately 75.The desserts are large enough to share among 2-4 people. I highly recommend the brownie sundae.
